Lake Erie East: Quick Facts
  • Long Point is the longest sand spit (40 km) on the Great Lakes
  • the inner portion of Long Pt. Bay reaches depths of 8'-10'. There is a variety of vegetation including extensive weed beds throughout. Targetted species include large and smallmouth bass, pike, perch and crappie. Species such as perch and smallmouth bass will migrate out of the inner bay to cooler waters in the summer. Cuts, inlets, harbours, creek inflows and rubble shores will all hold fish. The inner bay is a sanctuary area for a period in the spring. The deeper waters of the outer bay feature submerged weed beds and sandbars
  • the waters of Lake Erie from Turkey Pt. to Port Colborne have many near shore reefs and shoals which provide excellent structure for an amazing smallmouth bass fishery. Sand/rock transition areas are key to finding bass. Popular areas include Naticoke Shoal, Tecumseh Reef, Mohawk I. and Cassidy Reef.  Walleye will also utilize these shoal areas and points and the Grand River to spawn. They will suspend in deeper waters in the summer near schools of baitfish
  • rainbow trout (steelhead) and lake trout have been stocked in both the U.S. and Canadian sides of the lake
  • the entire length of the lake offers shore fishing opportunities at creek and river inflows and piers for perch, trout and salmon in the spring and fall
